In a recent visit to the Lira Institute of Health Sciences on 28th/03/2026, the Secretary General of UMLTA (Mr.Muyingo Yusuf) engaged with students, staff, and fellow alumni to review progress, discuss challenges, and outline future initiatives aimed at enhancing the institute’s development and alumni engagement focused on bridging the gap with the professional association the Uganda Medical Laboratory Technology Professionals association.

Celebrating Alumni Achievements and Community Spirit

The visit commenced with warm welcome remarks from the Institute’s Administrator , who opened with a prayer and commended alumni actively serving in various health sectors, notably highlighting Ronald’s dedication working in a hospital. The Administrator called on alumni for continued prayers and support for the financial growth of the institution, emphasizing the importance of alumni contributions.

The Association Vice President (Ms Nakasi Evelyn) expressed gratitude to the school administration for implementing resolutions from the previous AGM, especially celebrating the increased enrollment and new courses introduced as signs of institutional growth. She passionately urged alumni to serve as ambassadors and actively recruit new students, emphasizing that their support is vital for the school’s progress.

Yusuf, a Secretary general UMLTA, Laboratory Technologist by cadre and Deputy Chairperson secretariat of the Africa Test and Initiative, shared inspiring cross-institutional alumni experiences. He highlighted successful projects such as the alumni-led funding in His Primary level, which supports students facing financial difficulties, and as well praised his MUST alumni for their adaptability and hybrid approach to alumni engagement. Yusuf advised Lira Institute of health management and Sciences alumni to focus on tangible outputs —"open your wings"— and emphasized the importance of member contributions to realize impactful projects.

Progressive report on the previous AGM:

- Tuition Discounts: An impressive 70% of current diploma students are alumni, with approximately 70 million UGX in discounts already extended. The program continues to support alumni returning for further studies.

- Hairstyle Policy: The school now permits braided hairstyles for female students, adhering to the agreed style limits, enhancing appearance and discipline.

- Degree Program Development: Although discussions are ongoing, the proposal to introduce a bachelor’s degree program remains a priority, with updates expected from the administration.

- Investment Projects: The ambitious tractor project, which required member contributions, unfortunately lapsed due to insufficient funds and contributions. However, the association has registered as OBs and OGs Vendors Investment Association, opening avenues for future investment initiatives.

- Welfare Support System: Plans to formalize support during happy events like weddings and introductions are underway, with clear policies on eligible beneficiaries.

Strategic and Governance Discussions

The meeting addressed key governance issues, including the need to clarify roles within the association’s constitution. A committee was elected, led by Fred as Chairperson, to review the constitution particularly resolving conflicts where the President presides over all meetings ensuring a balanced and transparent leadership structure.

Participants discussed ways to bolster the school’s infrastructure and income generation, emphasizing alumni-led projects such as building modern labs, constructing new facilities, and establishing income-generating ventures modeled on successful Indian business frameworks. The idea of mobilizing the community through media, such as monthly radio talks and livestreamed lectures, was also proposed to increase awareness and participation.
